Like I did for Jurassic World, the week leading up to The Force Awakens was full of Star Wars themed outfits. If anything, this post can be classified as a lesson in how to take a piece and form an outfit around it to make it, at minimum, business casual.
On Monday, it started with a Star Wars t-shirt. I've actually worn this outfit to work previously. My black blazer, which is made of a jersey material and was on sale at Target for $10, is the most versatile piece in my wardrobe. Throw it over anything and it's immediately classy and intentional. Add in a nice piece of jewelry and there you go. The Converses take it in a more casual direction, so if you can handle something a little more uncomfortable, swap in some boots or heels.
Tuesday's attempt still needs some tweaking before I wear it again. Think Geek had a Black Friday sale and I got a great deal on this Jedi dress. It's so much fun to wear. The neckline can transform from shoulder covering to Jedi cowl and just about anything in between. I love it, but it proved to be very hard to dress up. My first attempt ended up looking a little Jedi and not enough 'workplace'. It's too cute of a dress for me to give up on making it work appropriate. It'll get there.
Wednesday, another t-shirt with another blazer. It's a great formula. It's not just for hipster tech-moguls. Anyone can pull it off.
Thursday was not Star Wars themed. It was a short week for me as Thursday was my last work day of the year. My tradition is to wear my Christmas sweater to my last day of work. And if you had a Christmas sweater as amazing as mine, it would trump Star Wars week, too.
At least my coworkers are starting to get used to my 'enthusiastic' fashion sense.

Mara Jade Halloween Costume: Finished!
I've been talking about my Halloween costume for months now and it's finally time for the big reveal. It's my favorite Halloween costume I've ever had. I plan on wearing it for every Halloween, costume party, and nerd convention until the end of time. IT COMPLETES ME. If it weren't so skin-tight, I would wear it everywhere, all the time.
Mara Jade!
Isn't it amazing?!?! I'm so proud of myself for actually making it all work. I wore it out for the first time over the weekend for some costumed restaurant crawling on 4th Avenue and it was fortunate that I did. It was like a beta version and I was able to adapt and fix all the little bugs I found.
Let's break it down now:
- Cowl: it's just an extra large women's t-shirt from Target with the sleeves and neckline cut-off, like this tutorial. I didn't even bother to hem mine. Cost: $8 [You could do this for much cheaper if you watched the sales better than I did.]
- Make up: since she's a Jedi, I figure she probably doesn't spend that much time on her make up, so I kept it very natural and neutral. Except for the eyes. Because of the cowl, I wanted them to stand out under it, so I did a pretty heavy smoky eye look. Counting it all up: seven different kinds and shades of eye shadow. Cost: free since I already had it all.
- Shoulder Harness: see here. Cost: $10 ($5 each for leather straps, free printed buckle, existing spray paint and sealer).
- Jumpsuit: you can buy it here. I was really afraid that this body suit was going to be too form fitting and unflattering, but the material is so forgiving. It's definitely not a high quality fabric, but it's stretchy enough that every bump and lump isn't highlighted. It's a little low-cut, but the cowl covers it up. Cost: $30.
- Lightsaber: Anakin's lightsaber. I got into a very heated debate with a friend of mine that said I had the wrong color. While Mara's empire lightsaber was red and her Jedi one was purple, Luke gave her his father's old lightsaber before she was a Jedi and it was blue. I bought it used off of Amazon and it's one of my favorite things ever. Too bad it scares the bejesus out of cats. If you ever wondered if cats have bejesus' wonder no more and Sam no longer has one. It may be because the first time Dan turned the lightsaber on, he first turned of all the lights and chased the cats around with it. This is as close as Sam will now get to it. We put it on things we don't want him to get into, like the counters. Cost: $44.
- Hip holster: I was originally just going to make a belt with a holster on it, but I had enough scrap from the shoulder harness that I decided to make the leg attachment as well, like this one. Superglue held some of the pieces together pretty well, but failed at other points, so Dan used a special leather glue he had after it started to fall apart from Saturday's wear. Also, if you make the leg part adjustable and made it fairly tight, it would probably stay in place pretty well, but since mine was loose, it kept sliding and shifting and catching on things. I added two pieces of twine to hold the front and back of it up better. Kind of cheap looking, but I like to call it industrial. Since I couldn't find a blaster small enough to wear it on my wrist like Mara does, I bought Boba Fett's blaster and attached it to the holster. [Sidenote: if you're reading this on November 1st, the pictures don't have the final holster design. I will add another picture today with it.] Cost: $18 ($5 for the leather strap, $5 for the leather piece I used to holster the gun, $8 for the gun from Target)
- Shin armor: it's just sporting equipment. I went to my local used sporting goods store and tried on a bunch of different shin guards. Apparently, a lot of sports require some sort of shin protection. The ones I originally wanted were much heavier duty, but they would have required a coat of spray paint since they were green. These ones were smaller, but since they were already black and silver, I just used some electrical tape to cover the brand names and called it good. Cost: $14.
- Boots: I love these boots. I did so much research into the boots I wanted and I was so glad DSW actually had them in stock. They were fairly expensive, given my usual cheap shoe budget, but I can wear them all the time and they are incredibly comfortable. Cost: $65.
Total Cost: $189
Non-reusable cost: $72 (assuming I will reuse the lightsaber, the blaster, and the boots.)
Not too bad, especially since it is my new favorite thing ever. There are lots of little things you could add to it still, like the cape or the sand goggles, but for now, I'm incredibly happy with it.
Now, who does a girl have to know to get these pictures to J.J. Abrams so he can put me in the new Star Wars movie?

How to Make a Star Wars Shoulder Harness
For my Mara Jade Halloween costume, a prominent feature of the costume is the shoulder harness. It's not exactly something you can buy on amazon, so I set out to make my own.
First, I started with the most important feature: the buckle.
From looking at this image, I created my own three dimensional model in a solid modeling software (perks of being a mechanical engineer). I based the width of the flanges on the width of the leather straps I bought from Hobby Lobby (1.5 inches with holes spaced an inch apart). The holes in the flanges were 6mm in diameter for screws and nuts I had on hand. The rest of the dimensions I chose just to recreate the look of the buckle, while making sure it wouldn't be flimsy enough that it would break in wear. I added in some filets and curves and voila! Star Wars buckle! (If you would like a copy of my solid model files or a dimensioned print to make your own, send me a note on my "Contact Me" tab.)
With my model and very lucky access to a 3D plastic printer (yay perks!), I ended up with this:
If you don't have access to a 3D printer, you could also mold it out of clay, glue together different pieces (like a coaster and some paint stirrers), or if you're really handy, carve it out of something.
I originally tried to paint it to look metal with some silver craft paint, but it really didn't want to go opaque. However, some aluminum colored spray paint went on brilliantly. If you make this yourself, trust me, choose spray paint.Be careful, though, because metallic spray paint is notorious for paint transfer, so make sure to also hit it with a coat or two of clear sealant.
With the buckle in hand, I just needed to make the two leather shoulder straps. Since I didn't want to waste leather by just guessing at the lengths it should be, I made a prototype using string (I made my prototype before paint just to make sure I didn't accidentally chip the paint). After several failed attempts, I came across a length that worked.
From hole to hole, 25 inches worked well for me (I'm 5'6" and wear a medium at Target if that helps any). I cut each strip an inch longer so that there would be 1/2 inch extra once the holes were added. It's probably the shortest I would go, an inch or two longer would still work nicely, too.
I created the holes in the leather similarly to the ones I needed for my floating shelf: nailing the strips to a piece of scrap wood. On one end of each strip, I angle the holes so that the leather would lay flat against my back. The first hole was half inch from the end of the strip and the second hole was an inch, with an inch distance between the two holes.
Once I screwed it all together, you end up with this:
I'll post more pictures later in the week of my completed costume, but this shoulder holster is definitely the coolest accessory. You can barely see it from the front because my hair and cowl cover the straps, but it's so epic from the back. Epic, I say!
{Sidenote: if you do use screws to hold everything in place, be careful sitting in chairs so that the screws don't damage things if they end up being a little too long, like mine.}

Mara Jade Halloween Costume
I know there's still a fair amount of time before Halloween, but I'm already working on my costume. Hopefully, the earlier I start, the cheaper I can make it. Also, it gives me more time to work out and actually be able to pull off my costume.
And that's because I'm going to attempt to be Mara Jade, from the Star Wars universe.
I'm so excited! I love the novels and I love the character. It's a perfect fit for me. A angry redheaded Jedi who used to be secretly one of the most powerful people in the Empire. How is that not me?
Anyway, I've been researching cosplay and costume components and I was afraid that it would get very expensive. I wanted to buy as many pieces as possible that I could use again in every day outfits or pieces I could make.
Here's the inspiration for my costume and a breakdown of components.
And here's mine, so far.
Total Cost for Pieces that probably won't be reused: $72.
Ouch. This will definitely be the most expensive Halloween costume I've ever had, but hopefully, if I make it right, I can wear it for many years for all sorts of occasions. Let's be real, there's always a reason to dress up as a Star Wars character.

- Suit - Obviously, I'm not going to be able to wear a skin tight cat suit to work or the mall, so I wanted to find one as cheap as possible. Since I've never purchased one before, I was afraid it would be a $100 or more investment, but I've found several cheap ones online, like this one, for under $40.
- Boots - I've been lusting after black leather motorcycle boots for quite some time, so I'm not really worried about these. I'll get a ton of use out of them. Cost: roughly $50.
- Light saber - It's got to be purple. Amazon carries one for $20. I really consider this an investment piece, too.
- Hood - I'll be making my own cowl hood using this tutorial. All I need to do is find a clearance shirt in a color I like now. Cost: roughly $2.
- Harness - I've got quite the plan for the harness. Combine some engineering resources, spray paint, and some discount belts, I think I may be able to make this harness for $10.
- Belt and Blaster - Maybe I will make this out of some discount belts and a spray painted toy gun, or maybe I will wait until it's closer to Halloween and find a costume one at Target for under $10.
- Shin Guards - The only thing I've thought of so far is going to a used sporting equipment store and spray painting some soccer padding black. Has anyone seen a good online tutorial on how to make these with maybe some cardboard? Cost: roughly $10.
- Hair and make up -Wild, red hair and natural make up. That'll probably be the easiest part of this look.
- Cape - maybe, if I'm feeling really fancy and come in under budget, I'll add in a cape.
Total Cost for Pieces that probably won't be reused: $72.

Ponyo and Princess Mononoke Walk into a Bar...
Last weekend, our local indie movie house hosted a showing of Ponyo with a costume contest to follow. So, what is a redheaded girl to do? Cosplay the crap out of it!
See? Don't we look just like them?
My little sister was Princess Mononoke. Our friend Schmidt made (remember that, he MADE) a Princess Mononoke mask, so we really thought Cheryl had the costume contest in the bag.
He MADE that mask! That's insane!
And in the ridiculously easy costume category, you have me. I spent Saturday afternoon at the mall, finding the red dress at Forever 21 and white shorts (like bloomers) at Old Navy. I wanted pieces that I could wear again. {Sidenote: I tried to jump in the pics so I could make it look like Ponyo in the movie, swimming or jumping or something. Clearly it was not that great of an idea.}
For only having two hours at the mall to find it, I'm quite proud of my costume. Now, I already had the crab sandals, but they were perfect for the costume.
In an upset, Cheryl didn't win the costume contest. The guy who won stayed in character all night and given that it was a million degrees and the lack of visibility, she wasn't keeping the Mononoke mask on constantly. It may be hard to tell, too, but Schmidt was dressed up as Sosoke.
We did both walk away with a small poster each, featuring raccoon testicles. Yay...
Oh! And the "walked into a bar" part. Afterward, we were starving since we skipped dinner to make our costumes so we went to a chicken and waffles bar. Which closed five minutes after we got there. No waffles for me. Why would a waffle bar close at 10PM is beyond me.

Fan of Friday: Week of 5/31/2013
Hello, my name is Carolyn and I am a nerd.
I've been embarrassed to admit it, but I've got quite a geeky obsession lately.
That's right. I'm currently racing through Star Wars expanded universe novels.
I had been checking them out from the library, but I started buying them at used bookstores because I don't want to be without them. I want to build up a library and these will apparently be my cornerstone.
So far, the only books I've read are based on characters established by the movies. Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. Once I make it through all of their books, I'll start on the Old Republic stories or the stories about their kids. Or maybe I'll read the Han Solo and Lando Calrissian prequels. Who knows? There are so many stories to choose from when you're late to the game.
Part of the reason I enjoy these stories so much is that they don't waste a lot of time on imagery or character development. When I type it out, it sounds terrible, but you get what I mean, right? There aren't pages and pages spent describing Princess Leia or her relationship with Han Solo or what the planet of Coruscant looks like. If you don't know, watch the movies (and if you haven't seen the movies, why are you reading the book?)
It's professional fan-fiction, people. Get on the bandwagon! It's awesome!

I don't know why this makes me so happy...

Exploring the Real James Bond
I love James Bond. Not Sean Connery or Pierce Bronson or Roger Moore or Daniel Craig (actually, I do love Daniel Craig. Yummy!). I love the character of James Bond. The character as Ian Fleming wrote him, not the caricature that Hollywood has turned him into.
For my birthday this year, I requested the complete collection of Sir Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. I had been reading the novels when I could find them at the library, but I wanted to read them all, start to finish. It's been almost 8 months, but I'm on the last one. And through over a thousand pages of Bond, I feel like I've finally got a grasp on the man he was meant to be.
Over the past fifty years, twenty-three movies, and six actors, James Bond has been many things, but accurate sadly to the books was never one of them.
- He's lucky, not invincible. If you were to believe the movies, James Bond is almost a superhero. He swoops in, saves the day and the girl, all the meanwhile avoiding insult and injury. In actuality, he's been stabbed, shot, poisoned, tortured, even stretched on a rack. Most of the time, he messes up the plan and lucks into a solution at the end. The bullet hits the book instead of his heart. The girl pulls him out of the water before he drowns. The barracuda attacks the goon he's fighting. And I prefer my Bond this way. It makes him human.
- He's a romantic at heart. He's not the smooth talking ladies man who, like the Fonz, snaps his fingers and all the ladies come running. Yes, he basically does sleep with someone inevitably in every book, but it's not anything like the movies. He knows all these women for 200+ pages of plot before he beds most of them. He has relationships with them afterward as well, the ones that survive anyway. After "Diamonds are Forever", he brings the girl back to England and tries to make it work, but she leaves him for an American marine. And most people criticize the fact that he got married in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", but it made perfect sense. James Bond has always been looking for that perfect woman to settle down with, but at the same time, he doesn't want to put any woman through being married to a spy. He doesn't need a wife, he's got a housekeeper who mothers him and a job that takes up all his time. However, deep down, he wants a simpler life. A normal life. Every time he meets a new woman who tickles his fancy, he convinces himself that this is the one. This one will be different and they can, somehow, have a happy life together. It never does, but he keeps on trying.
- He didn't rely on much technology. True fanboys will talk about how there is a Q in the books, but honestly, I couldn't tell you anything about him. I know someone comes along and explains to Bond about his hidden weapons in "From Russia with Love", but there definitely isn't a character created. And there really isn't a need for him because Bond doesn't rely on technology. He has his gun and his wits and that's really all that he's comfortable with. No sonic watch. No machine-gun car. I'll let this one slide some, though, because all the books were written in the 1950's. A time before security cameras and cell phones and everything now that James Bond must work against just to complete his goal. It was much easier just to come up with a fake name, pretend to be a rich tourist scouting real estate, and become besties with the bad guys. But that's part of what I like about the novel version of Bond: he has to use his wits to get himself in and out of these situations.
- He didn't like being a spy. At nearly the end of every mission, he had plans to return to England with the girl of the moment, marry her, move to the country to become a chicken farmer, never to be heard from again. He was tired. He'd basically been a spy since WWII (so roughly twenty years when the novels were released) and he knew he wouldn't be able to push his luck much longer. Double 0's have a very short lifespan and he wanted out. He wasn't a superhero bent on saving England from every potential threat. He was almost middle-aged and he wanted to live his life. However, whenever he gets the stability he so craves, he's itching for the excitement of the field again. In a perfect world, he'd be a spy without the possibility of dying. He wants to have his cake and eat it, too.
Personally, I would love a remake of the series where it's all period. I want to see my Bond as a vet of WWII, trying to navigate the evolving, repairing world. To see him battle the Commie Russians and SPECTRE and to drive through the French countryside for days, trying to tail the villain. If you take out the technology conundrum, I believe the character and the stories would shine more.
That's not to say I'm not enjoying the revamp of Bond in the last decade. I love that the newest Craig movies have gotten back to more of the roots of Bond. He's flawed. He gets the crap beaten out of him. He wants to love the girl. He doesn't know if he's the good guy or the bad guy at times. He relies on those around him. He's finally human again.
And because I wouldn't leave you high and dry, here's the trailer to the new Bond movie coming out this fall. Luckily, they always seem to be released around Dan's birthday and we celebrate by Bond-ing it up.
I can't believe I almost forgot to mention how awesome he was at the Olympic Opening Ceremony! As much as I love the Olympics and the British (probably my two favorite things), the British ain't no Chinese. The ceremony was kind of a stinker, EXCEPT for the total awesomeness that was Daniel Craig as Bond.
[Note: I tried to find a video of it, but apparently it's not on YouTube. That's just wrong.]

Fan of Friday: Week of 5/18/2012
Have you ever seen the movie "Cherry 2000"? Have you ever even heard of the movie "Cherry 2000"? Probably not, but you should have because it's awesome.
I'll be honest, it's a terrible movie. A terrible, terrible movie. But at the same time, it has to be the definition of campy. Post-apocalyptic future? Check. Robots and crazy technology that will never exist? Check. 80's futuristic fashion? Check. Car chases through desert? Check.
The first time I saw it, it was on accident. The movie I was watching on one of those high numbered digital channels ended (like 11-2 or something) and being too lazy to change the channel on a Saturday afternoon, I caught the first 15 minutes before having to leave. Luckily for me and the rest of humanity, they replayed it the next weekend. Yay!
Here's a basic breakdown. It's about this rich guy who accidentally breaks his robot wife. To find the replacement parts for her, he hires a bounty hunter to take him through the wasteland desert outlaw country to a rumored robot warehouse.
For some star power, the bounty hunter was played by Melanie Griffith, who would skyrocket a couple of years later in the movie "Working Girl".
Random fact: the movie was supposed to be released in the summer of 1986, then postponed until spring 1987, then fall 1987, then finally ultimately being released direct to VHS in fall 1988. Because of the shifting of the schedule, the soundtrack became a collectors item as only 1500 were sold when it was released in 1986, without the movie itself being released.
So, if you're one of those hip people with a DVR or Netflix, search it out. You will not be disappointed.

I Am Terribly Ashamed of Myself
I don't know how it happened. I really don't know how I let myself fall for it. I thought I was smarter than this.
Somehow, against ALL my better judgement, I am actually looking forward to the release of the next Twilight movie.
Ugh! Don't judge me! I don't know how it happened.
I saw the first one when I had the flu a couple of years ago. Dan rented it for me because he knew with my flu headache, I shouldn't be watching movies with loud noises and explosions. And the first Twilight is just soft music in cloudy meadows of lilac.
And let's make this clear, I did not like the first one. Snooze fest. None of the characters were enjoyable (Pretty sure I hate Edward), except maybe the dad. And it just willy-nilly made up rules about vampires. Fine, I will accept the sparkly thing, but what happened to a wooden stake through the heart? That's just classic! The only thing good to come out of that one was the jacket Bella wore (I have it in green).
I recorded "New Moon" on my parent's DVR just to bug Dan with it. He was miserable through the first one and I thought it would be funny to make him watch the second one with me. And, again, not good. I can't even recall what the storyline really was. Wasn't it just vampires and werewolves don't get along? Period. Only good thing from that one was a now buff Taylor Lautner.
We finally caught up on the third one a couple of weeks ago. Again, I recorded it on my parent's DVR to torture Dan, but he just slept through it as my sister and I watched. Most of our time was spent mocking it.
Somehow, after all these bad experiences with the franchise, the advertising for the latest one is dragging me in. I need to know what the wedding dress looks like! And the honeymoon! I need to know how the sex finally goes down. And the horrible birth! Must know!
Don't tell anyone, but I'm secretly hoping my sister invites me to see it Friday.
Ugh, I am so disappointed in myself.

Clint Eastwood is my Grandpa
Or more accurately, my Grandpa is like Clint Eastwood. Have you seen "Gran Turino"? We watched it last night for Dan's birthday (I checked it out from the library, so it was free baby!) and Clint Eastwood is bad-ass. Just like my Grandpa.
My Grandpa is 95 years old and always wears his rattlesnake skin cowboy boots. He golfed every other day until his doctor finally ordered him to stop a couple months ago. He's killed more snakes with golf club s than I care to admit.
But he's also incredibly sweet and understanding. He was the first one in the family to embrace my vegetarianism, even though he raised cattle for dozens of years. He once told me how proud he was of all his granddaughters because we had college educations so we would never have to depend on a man. He's awesome.
Anyway, after watching "Gran Turino" last night, I came across this quote from Clint Eastwood and it's definitely something I could imagine my Grandpa surprising me by saying.
These people who are making a big deal out of gay marriage? I don't give a fuck about
who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We're making a big deal out of
things we shouldn't be making a deal out of. They go on and on with all this bullshit about
"sanctity" — don't give me that sanctity crap! Just give everybody the chance to have the
life they want.
Bad-ass and sweet. Just like my Grandpa.

The Reunion I Enjoyed Most
Entertainment Weekly has been reunited casts from movies and television for their latest issue. While I've been looking forward to it, mainly for the Princess Bride reunion, the pictures I enjoyed the most are actually from the Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion reunion (reunion reunion...).
First of all, how random is it to reunite them? Not that I'm complaining, but it is definitely random.
Secondly, it picture is awesome! Whoever came up with the Post-It idea is an absolute genius. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, well, you best go rent the movie. Rent it! Right now!
Or, if you're actually living in this decade, queue it on Netflix...

Dance Party in Gotham City
Today, a spoiler pic was released from the set of the next Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. You can see the original picture here.
When I first saw the picture, I only saw a portion of it. Now, I've cropped it down and with my amazing artistic talents (PAINT!), tell me you can look at this and not see what I see! I like my version better.
If I only knew how to make a gif, I would be forever amused.

Imagine the Most Random Celebrity Possible...
Who would it be?
Is it Steve Buscemi? It should be Steve Buscemi.
Now imagine that celebrity's face on a dress. And not just on a dress, their face IS the dress. It would probably look something like this...
BAM! Steve Buscemi dress!
And what is wrong with you if you don't know who Steve Buscemi is? He's been in everything! If you don't know who he is, go rent Fargo. Go! Now! Rent it! My friend described it like this to me before we watched it:
"It's a comedy about North Dakota. Very funny."
No. No, it's not.
Anyway, is it sad that I love this dress? I don't think it could be any more random that this dress, which is why it should be essential to my wardrobe. And if I had it, I would totally do the exact same pose as this model. It says, "Hey! Steve Buscemi is on my boobies!"
