How to: Buy a Girl a Present

Most men never know what to get for the woman in their lives. A lot of websites come up with generic lists around holidays, but most of the things on the list would normally be pathetic gifts. Instead of a list, I've developed a strategy. If you can manage to hit three out of the four categories, it should be a good gift. If you succeed at four for four, it will be an unforgettable gift.

1. Occasion
There are five major holidays when it comes to giving women gifts: her birthday, Christmas, Valentine's Day, your anniversary, and Mother's Day (assuming she is a mother). Some presents work for one occasion but not others. Most holidays have standards that come along with it for what kind of gifts are acceptable. For example, stuffed animals are only really acceptable on Valentine's Day or anniversaries. Also, things like cookware can only really given for Christmas or Mother's Day.

2. Function
Personally, I believe the best presents are the ones with some kind of necessary purpose. For some reason, people like to give me decorative bowls. While someone else may find a decorative bowl really handy, I only have so much surface space and tiny objects that need collecting in decorative bowls. If your girlfriend is always leaving her purses and coats in a pile by the door, maybe a vintage coat rack would be appreciated. But if she has an immaculately organized, tiny studio apartment, a big, bulky coat rack taking up her space probably won't go over well. Things that take up space and may not be used that often, like knick-knacks and candles, should be given with caution.

3. Personalization
The more a gift is tailored to the woman, the better the present will be received. Buy her a blouse in her favorite color, not the color that washes her out. Does she prefer silver or gold? The purpose of personalization is giving her something she will want to have. It may be a lovely necklace, but if it's not her style, she'll most likely never wear it and who wants to give a gift that will forever sit in a drawer.

4. Effort
Any guy can pick up a bouquet of flowers at the grocery store on their way home from work. Instead, go to a florist and design a bouquet using her favorite flowers, colors, and, GASP!, an actual vase! And it doesn't have to be something expensive, it can be something that you made or put the finishing touch on.

Things to give at your own risk:
  • Any sort of cleaner - vacuum, dishwasher, etc.
  • Something you want for yourself - video games, movies, etc.
  • Lingerie - unless you know her size, her taste, and what kind of lingerie she likes, just stay away from this one. You will lose more brownie points than you could ever earn if you buy her a fishnet bodysuit two sizes too small and expect her to wear it.
  • Home-made coupons - unless you agreed on not spending money or it is part of a larger gift, it will look like you completely forgot and threw them together at the last minute. Also, we can get all the "Free Hugs" we want, moron.
  • Cash, gift cards, an IOU - the only way this idea kind of works is if you got her an actual present and then took her shopping at her favorite store on the way to dinner.
  • Anything for the two of you - if you both use it, it can be a present, but it should be a surprise present on a non-holiday. A gift on an ordinary Thursday. And be very mindful with this one because if it's something you both use, she will most likely want some say in it.
Examples of gifts that hit all four categories:
  • A pink or red cardigan for Valentine's Day. Depending on your budget, pick up a cotton, wool, or cashmere cardigan at a department store. Once you have a sweater, go to a fabric store and pick out some new buttons that she would love. Replace the old buttons on the sweater with the new ones.
    • Occasion: color of cardigan
    • Function: sweater can be worn anytime
    • Personalization: new buttons
    • Effort: sewing on the new buttons
  • A handmade wall clock. Buy a clock kit and some collage glue at a craft store. Make a collage of things that remind you of her or pictures of the places you've been together on the face of the clock. Attach little pictures of you and her on the hands of the clock (put some thought into whether she would want to be the minute or the hour hand)
    • Occasion: best for anniversaries
    • Function: who doesn't need another clock? I never know what time it is.
    • Personalization: she's on a clock!
    • Effort: you made a clock!

Maybe this is morbid...

...but can you imagine Lady Gaga in ten years?

I just can't. Not because I think she'll do something so outlandish that there's no way I could predict it.

But, because, as horrible as it sounds, I can't imagine her being alive in ten years. She's got that quality, like Elvis, like Marilyn Monroe, like John Lennon, like River Phoenix. To me, she's just going to burn as brightly as she can before she burns out before her time.

Also, compare these two pictures of her. One is from two years ago, where she looks like a normal(ish) pop star. The other is from a couple of months ago, looking like she hasn't eaten in months. Combine that with the partying and lack of eating she admits to, and it's not an equation for longevity.

My Birth Control is Driving Me Insane

One of the biggest dilemmas I faced as a newlywed is trying to figure out which birth control method to use. At this point, it's not an issue of which one we like best, it's which one doesn't make me feel like driving my car through a mile of beehives, followed by a plummet off a cliff onto sharp jagged rocks.

Imagine every method of birth control out there. Now imagine trying them all or researching the ones that are too invasive to the point of nightmares.

Every.

Single.

One.

After six months of trials and tribulations, I don't know if we're any closer to a solution. But here's what I've found:

Conventional birth control pills:
I was on birth control pills from the ages of 16 to 20. During that time, I was dating a pretty crappy guy. When I broke up with him, I went off the pill. And I was happy for the first time in a long time, but I chalked it up to cutting the jerk out of my life. So when I went back on the pill two months before the wedding and I felt like crap, I finally realized the pills might be to blame. I don't know why I didn't put it together earlier. I can't drink caffeine because it stays in my system for days, but I thought birth control pills wouldn't cause any problems? Geez...

It wouldn't be that bad if it didn't give me HORRIBLE mood swings. Every once in a while, venom starts to pump through my veins and I get the urge to grab someone by the throat and see how far my nails would dig in. It's not healthy.

Low Hormone birth control pills:
I talked to my gynecologist about the mood swings, so she put me on the lowest hormone pill on the market. However, because it's a new pill, insurance doesn't cover it. She gave me a two month sample, but I don't think I'll stay on it. Ask my husband about my mood today. These new pills aren't any better.

Condoms:
Personally, I have no problems with condoms. It's my husband that the issue. He's willing to use them even though he doesn't enjoy them, but the major problem is that he hasn't gotten up the courage to carry one with him. I keep leaving condom cases up on the computer screen but I think he's scared someone will see it and, GASP!, think he has sex with his new bride. The horror!

Diaphragms:
Did you know that getting fitted for a diaphragm is counted as a surgical procedure? Yep, found that out after going to my gynecologist and getting a bill three weeks later because my insurance doesn't cover "surgical procedures".

And that's not the most embarrassing part. When I was getting fitted, the doctor left the room so I could remove it and put it back to prove that I could do it. I can't. That was a loooong five minutes waiting for her to come back in. Even though I couldn't get it to work in the office, she still wrote me a prescription for one. Maybe I'll have better luck at home?

Pull-Out:
I know it should be considered a real method, but since we like to use at least two methods simultaneously, it could work as a back-up. There are only two real downsides: 1) I have to put severe faith in my husband being able to end things in time and 2) It means he can't even enjoy a finish.

Rhythm Method:
Another method that may work as a back-up. The downside is that I have absolutely no idea how it works. None. And, from the little I understand, you really have to track your cycle to use it, which means it probably wouldn't even be an option until I've been off the pill for a while. But since I'm good at math and love to plan, it might be the perfect back-up.

IUDs:
Have you ever researched IUDs? There are only two schools of thought on it: either they are the greatest thing ever invented or they ruin lives. No in-between. I really don't want to risk ruining my life over it.

So, I think that as of the end of this cycle of pills, we'll end up using some combination of condoms, pull-out, and the rhythm method. Ugh, I wish this was easier.

At least Dan and I agree on the vascetomy after we're done having kids. Snip snip!

Two Umbrellas in my Car

This morning, as I was getting ready for work, I thought to myself, Maybe I should throw an umbrella in my purse? Just in case a monsoon storm rolls through this afternoon. Wait, no, I've got two umbrellas in my car. I'll just throw one of them in my ridiculously large purse...

Well, I forgot about the umbrella until I was ready to head home from work today. (Note to self: if your office doesn't have windows because it's deep in the heart of a refurbished warehouse, go to this handy website called weather.com before you pack up to leave.) Stepping out of the office, there were wet footsteps walking past the door and towards the elevator. My first thought was that one of the new call center people upstairs must have spilled something and were now tracking it throughout the building. As I slipped my sunglasses on, the group of people huddled near the exit finally caught my attention.

It was pouring. More than pouring. The sky was charcoal, the ground was flowing, and you couldn't see beyond thirty feet in front of the building.

After standing there for five minutes without any change, I ran for it.

Thank my lucky stars for choosing to wear my running shoes today.

Running through the parking lot to my car (which I should note had to be at least a quarter mile from the building) proved to be a challenge. Run too slowly and you get unnecessarily wet, run too fast and you could slip and fall. Either way, you would have ended up looking like this:

And I was so proud of my outfit today. So cute.

Apparently, by the time my husband left work, the rain had let up and the flooding in the parking lot had gone down, which was lucky for him given this is how his car looked when I left work (after driving back to the door to give my dad a dry lift to his car):

So...

Does this mean I don't need to wash my hair tonight?

Inside the lines

During a monsoon storm over the weekend, the lightning knocked the power out for a couple of hours. What's a 24 year old woman to do?

Obviously, color in my Hello Kitty activity book by candlelight.

Oh, and when it's done, hang it on the fridge with Elvis magnets.

Happy Fourth of July

And what is more American than a good old fashion car show? In honor of July 4th, here are some of my favorite photos from the car shows I went to this weekend.

 Classic 70's police cruiser

Just a small portion of  the selection of new Challengers at the show at the Dodge dealer.

This is one of my favorite cars to see around town. It's got a car painted on a car! Thanks to my ninja skills, I pulled my camera out just in time to capture it.

The Good Burger mobile! Or as my mom refers to it, my sister's future car.

A smattering of cars as the monsoons start to form in the distance.

Only a Little Anthony's car show would give you a surfer's 60's VW Beetle next to a last generation Ford Mustang.

Explanations of the reasons why women cheat

For the last couple days days, Yahoo has had displayed an article called Confessions: 7 reasons why women cheat. The article gives the reason, followed by real-life stories from women who experienced it. It doesn't get to the true reasons behind why these women behaved the way they did. So here are my theories as to the true motivations behind these women:

1. There’s no passion
The article tells the tale of a woman who was with her boyfriend for three years and avoiding a future with him. He was nice but there was no spark. She met a guy on vacation, there was instant spark, so she broke up with her boyfriend and ended up marrying vacation guy.
Moral of the story: Women settled for the guy who looks good on paper. There wasn't really anything wrong with her boyfriend, but she knew she didn't want to be with him. Rather than break up with him when she felt like something was off, she stuck around, hoping things would change in the relationship or she could change him. By meeting this new guy, she finally realized she was settling.

2. To delay a break up
One thing after another kept going wrong in her boyfriend's life so she didn't have the heart to break up with him and add to his sadness. She met a guy in the meantime and she could no longer put it off any longer, she ended it.
Moral of the story: Women put their partner's happiness ahead of their own. They don't want to be a jerk when breaking up with someone. We've all heard stories about the asshole who broke up with his girlfriend on her birthday/Valentine's Day/when her grandma died and no woman wants to do that to someone else. But at the same time, you shouldn't stick around because it's not a good time to get out. Between holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc, there's always a reason to put off a break up. Just suck it up and do it.

3. Because absence doesn’t make the heart grow fonder
Long distance + hot guy = cheating
Moral of the story: Long distance can only work if both people are committed to making it work. It's one thing to flirt with some new guy you meet when your boyfriend is on the other side of the country, but it's a whole other situation entirely to act on it. If you make the jump from flirting to flinging, there are problems at home. Period.

4. To avoid being left out in the cold
Dumped by Guy #1, she rebounded with Guy #2. Guy #1 comes back around, but she's afraid he'll hurt her again, so she sees him behind Guy #2's back just in case he leaves her.
Moral of the story: If you aren't over Guy #1, don't start dating anyone else. And if you do pick up a rebound, it's got to be purely that, a rebound. You can't treat it as something more. That doesn't mean that he doesn't deserve the respect of an actual break-up, but if it isn't going anywhere, you can't be afraid to end it.

5.  To make a break from a bad relationship
A girl is in a relationship with a guy that treats her like crap. Along comes a nice guy and she cheats with the nice guy.
Moral of the story: The title on this one, to me, is all wrong. It's not that she cheated as an excuse to end the relationship. It's that she realized how bad her current relationship is and finally decided to end things. A lot women (myself included because this did happen to me, minus the cheating) stay in a bad relationship because they either don't know how unhealthy their current relationship is or that they don't think anyone else will want to be with them. Once a new guy comes along who treats them with respect and shows them that they do deserve more, they finally have the courage to get out. It's just a sad commentary on society that so many women stay in bad relationships because they think they can fix it. They think they can make things better. They think they can force respect.

6. To find that missing piece
A woman is with a guy who isn't the complete package, but things are good most of the time. She meets someone new who may not be the complete package, but at least makes her happy in different ways, and she cheats.
Moral of the story: You may not know what you need from someone else to be happy. You may not know what you need from someone else to be in a healthy relationship. Many women have lists of what they want in a boyfriend (sense of humor, intelligent, good-looking, etc.), but how important are those things to you? And how important are the little things you didn't think to put on the list? Like the type of vacation you like to take? It's hard to determine those things until you've dated several people and even then, how do you know if it is something you'll be able to compromise on? I guess my point is that if something is/becomes a dealbreaker, you've only got two options: to deal or to break.

7. To give him a taste of his own medicine
Boy cheats, girl finds out, girl cheats to get revenge.
Moral of the story: Turn about is fair play. Unless you think you can salvage the relationship, this one sounds all kinds of fine to me.

It's Like Watching a Car Crash, I Can't Look Away...

It's a marathon of My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding on TLC. My husband and his parents are sitting around the living room catching up on the magazines they trade every visit and I can't unglue my eyes from the TV. It doesn't matter that I've already seen every episode, I must watch it.

Not only is the culture complete unlike anything I've ever seen, but the fact that the whole series is based on over the top weddings? I'm sold.

Things that make this show a trainwreck:
  1. Everyone dresses slutty from about the age of 8 and up. Spray tans, bleached hair, tiny clothes that don't cover anything, over the top make up, and it's all OK because all the men know that they are good Catholic girls who won't do anything until their wedding night...at the ripe old age of 17. If you didn't know any better, between the way they dress and the way they dance, "stripper" would be the first word to pop into you head. And it's even more disturbing when the first thing you think is stripper when the girl is only 8 years old.
  2. The wedding dresses weigh more than the brides. Most of the time, the teenage brides can't fit through doorways, into cars, and have to waddle down the aisle. The girls usually end up with horrible looking welts and worn spots on their torsos from supporting the hoop skirts and boning.
  3. The culture is incredibly antiquated. Most girls are taken out of school before the age of 12 to help run the house. Starting at the age of 15, they start hunting a husband by dolling themselves up and heading to every wedding they can. Although, they go to events with the intention of meeting someone, they can't act interested and it would be unheard of to make the first move. Once they have managed to land a husband, their lives become about keeping their trailers clean.

I really don't know how they can afford their lifestyles, but somehow they make it work.

I'm really looking forward to the American version of this show. I can't say I've ever really heard of gypsies in the US but I guess they've got to be here somewhere, right?

Fan of Friday: Week of 7/1/2011

Last weekend, the hubs and I decided to make it a date night. After a yummy and grease-filled dinner at our favorite 50's diner (mmm, milkshakes...), we caught a showing of Conan O'Brien Can't Stop at the local indie house.

It was a really interesting movie. I suggested it to Dan because he loves stand-up comedy and I just expected it to be a lot jokes and gags. However, it was more about the stress he was going through with losing his dream job, finding a way to still be relevant, and dealing with the exhaustion of a tour.

The behind of the scenes of the tour reminded me a lot of a wedding.
  1. You're prettied up within an inch of your life
  2. You have to smile and take a lot of pictures with people you really don't know
  3. And by the end of the night, you're completely drained and looking forward to just falling into bed, regardless of how much you should want to stay up and do other things.
While I don't know if I could go back that I'd pay $7 again, but it's definitely worth a watch.

Top Ten Stores to Build a Wardrobe

1. Old Navy
I posted a couple of weeks ago about the awesomeness that Old Navy. The sizes are always wrong but seeing a smaller number, even if it's a blatant lie, always makes me feel a little cheerier. Also, I think that all my nicer pants, like khakis and trousers, are from Old Navy, too. Another plus is their huge swimsuit collection. One piece, mix and match bikinis, you name it, they probably have it covered.
2. Forever 21
The quality at Forever 21 is utter crap, I'll say that up front. However, if your in need of cheap staples, like camis, they are the place to go. They have just about every color and they are only $2.50. So for ten dollars, you can have two neutrals and two brights and have 95% of your wardrobe covered. Also, while most of their accesories fall apart (I have super-glued more than one pair of earrings and have a necklace that I can't wear in the summer because it turns my neck green when I sweat), they are cute and cheap.
3. Target
I could walk into any Target and know that I could easily walk out with something. The beauty of Target is that so much of their clothing department are pure staples: t-shirts, cardigans, and tank tops. However, the thing you need to be careful of at Target is that is is very mass produced. Don't buy anything that's very distinct looking because you will run into someone else you know who has the exact same item. A basic t-shirt is easier to overlook than a floral sundress.

One of my favorites at Target is their bra selection. It doesn't matter if other people have it because who would ever know? Their bras aren't all over-padded like at Victoria's Secret and they just seem to fit me better. Oh yeah, and they don't cost $50+! Their purses wear out fairly quickly if you rely on one every day, but they have classic designs for cheap so they are easy to replace.
4. ModCloth
This is my favorite store for distinct pieces. They specialize in dresses, most of them shorter than they claim, but their jewelry and blouse selection are fairly large, too. They cater more to a hipster sort of vibe, but they also can go very romantic and whimsical. Two warnings about ModCloth:
1) Their merchandise goes very quickly. If it's a new arrival and you like it, you have to buy it within two days. After that, you can almost guarentee your size will be gone. However, they have recently added a "Back in Stock" section which I love. You can see reviews from people to know if it is a good purchase (the picture reviews are the best thing ever).
2) The materials they use can be kind of sketchy. A lot of synthetics that don't stretch or breathe. Be careful to expand the "Details" section of a piece before you fall in love with anything.
5. Buffalo Exchange
Or your equivalent high-end thrift store. Their inventory is highly scrutinized and they have a great return policy on most of their stuff so you don't really need to worry about the fact that it is "pre-loved". The dress I wear to weddings is a second-hand blue Calvin Klein blue satin dress from Buffalo. I'm pretty sure someone used it as a bridesmaid's dress before, but it's in great condition and I love the color. It's much easier to buy a distinct piece at a store like this without worrying if someone else has it. Also, the only designer labels I have are second-hand. They hold up well because of the high-quality.
6. Victoria's Secret
I don't actually ever buy anything at Victoria's Secret. The trick is to order one thing online from them and, although you will get a catalog every other week for the rest of your life, they will send you a coupon for free panties once every three months. So find a bra or top on sale on their website and enjoy a lifetime of free panties.
7. Dillards
While I find most of Dillard's clothing overpriced, I do love their sale on coats and jackets. The ideal time to hit them up is January, once the winter season is dying down and to take advantage of the post-Christmas sales.
8. Express
My favorite blouses for work are from Express. While their merchandise is usually out of my budget, they send me a coupon almost every two weeks that make it livable. Their blouses are well-cut and in gorgeous colors. They are practical and of fairly high quality. The first time I bought a blouse from Express, I went back a week later and bought two more in different colors. A little tip, a lot of their stuff looks ridiculous on the hanger, so start with the pieces that are on the mannequins.
9. Etsy
I LOVE Etsy. If I could only buy jewelry from one place, it would be Etsy. They have incredible diversity in their selection. I love that my purchase is supporting an artist who put time and love into each piece. The quality is higher than you would find in most stores. And, most importantly, every piece is individual. I love looking through their collection just to get ideas for jewelry too. My wedding band is based on the rings I loved most on Etsy.
10. Zappos
While I haven't been able to keep any of the shoes I've purchased through Zappos, I love their selection, the prices, and especially the return policy. I've got my eye on a pair of boots that will be one of the first things I buy once all this house drama is behind us and I can shop again. One day, one of their pairs will be perfect and be allowed to stay.
